چکیده

Forest models can be useful tools to improve our understanding of forest dynamics and to evaluate potential impacts of climate change. There is an ongoing debate how drought events influence the dynamics of tropical forests. In this study, we explored the role of changes in precipitation on tropical forests in Madagascar. Therefore, we derived a new parameterization of the process-based forest model FORMIND using local forest inventory measurements. This model was extended by a drought sensitivity module based on a water use efficiency concept. The objective of this study is to evaluate how different levels of water availability modify forest productivity, and net ecosystem exchange as a function of mean annual precipitation. Our simulation results indicate that a moderate precipitation decline (0%e30% of current precipitation conditions) has only minor impact on forest carbon stocks and exchange. A rainfall decline below 30% of current precipitation conditions would change forest structure considerably. 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Estimation of biomass, carbon stocks and soil sequestration of Gowatr mangrove forests, Gulf of Oman

The mangrove forest ecosystem is known to possess a variety of ecosystem services, including high rates of carbon sequestration, storage and mitigating climate change through reduced deforestation. This study was carried out in the mangrove forests of Gowatr Bay, Gulf of Oman during 2017-18 to quantify biomass and carbon stocks of all components of this forest, including live and dead trees, so...

Species loss and aboveground carbon storage in a tropical forest.

Tropical forest biodiversity is declining, but the resulting effects on key ecosystem services, such as carbon storage and sequestration, remain unknown. We assessed the influence of the loss of tropical tree species on carbon storage by simulating 18 possible extinction scenarios within a well-studied 50-hectare tropical forest plot in Panama, which contains 227 tree species. Among extinction ...

CTFS Global Forest Carbon Research Initiative Overview of Planned Research

Understanding of the stocks and flows of carbon in tropical and temperate forests is critically intertwined with many important questions in basic and applied ecology. Because tropical and temperate forests together encompass an estimated 38% of terrestrial carbon pools and 48% of terrestrial net primary production (1), knowledge of their carbon dynamics and of how these dynamics respond to nat...

Liana Impacts on Carbon Cycling, Storage and Sequestration in Tropical Forests

Mature tropical forests sequester large quantities of atmospheric CO2, which they store as plant biomass. These forests are changing however, including an increase in liana abundance and biomass over recent decades in Neotropical forests. We ask here how this increase in lianas might impact the tropical forest carbon cycle and their capacity for carbon storage and sequestration. Lianas reduce t...

Effects of harvest, fire, and pest/pathogen disturbances on the West Cascades ecoregion carbon balance

BACKGROUND Disturbance is a key influence on forest carbon dynamics, but the complexity of spatial and temporal patterns in forest disturbance makes it difficult to quantify their impacts on carbon flux over broad spatial domains. Here we used a time series of Landsat remote sensing images and a climate-driven carbon cycle process model to evaluate carbon fluxes at the ecoregion scale in wester...
